Cattle Drives: Spring & Fall

We've been in the cattle drive business for more than twenty-five years and worked with the biggest and the best outfits on the Blackfeet Reservation for that entire time. You'll be treated to a week of an authentic western tradition, moving the cattle onto the powerful and growing green grass on horseback under the shadow of the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains. This part of the West, most specifically on the land of the Blackfeet Nation, is still primitive and raw, far off the beaten path of the modern world we love to leave behind. You're going to see some of the most spectacular country on the planet and you'll be doing so on horseback.

One of the more underrated elements of a great horseback adventure are the folks you'll be meeting and working with on the job. You're going to be making some lifelong friends with other guests on the cattle drive but also with the gang running the show. You'll be riding and visiting with some of the best horse hands and cowboys anywhere. The Blackfeet Indians are wonderful folks, rich in culture and tradition, wrapped up in the history of this nation, full of joy, humor, and hospitality. Life doesn't get any better than a week right here.

Each day with us during the week you're here at Bear Creek Ranch will be one to remember. This includes pushing cows and calves to summer pasture, sorting heifers and steers, and sometimes if you're brave enough you can jump in and try your hand at castrating. You'll get the chance to get your hands dirty but first be sure that you will be horseback everyday!

Every day begins with a huge breakfast at Bear Creek Ranch. Lunch is normally on the trail and we head back to the ranch for a delicious dinner. We are certainly known for not letting any of our guests go hungry so be sure to arrive with an appetite!

Arrive Sunday and depart the following Saturday after breakfast.

One of our Best Trips!

During the course of our trip this past season, as shown in the accompanying photos, I spent quite a bit of time riding and visiting with one of the owners of the cattle we were gathering, Ray Champ. Ray is one of the states' most accomplished rodeo announcers and in addition, raises quarter horses and cattle as well. He matches my enthusiasm for the guest business while at the same time is always looking for ways to spend his time horseback. One can be in Ray's company for five minutes and feel the infectious energy he has for riding and getting to know complete strangers. You'll see what I mean next fall!
We'll be joining forces with Ray and his family and spending the later October days gathering and moving their herd from the Mitten Lake Country on the Blackfeet Reservation , some of the most awesome country you'll ever have the pleasure of riding in, out of the mountains and foothill country, and taking them east.
This trip begins with your arrival at Bear Creek Ranch by plane to Kalispell or driving directly to the ranch just west of East Glacier. Arrive that Sunday by mid-afternoon, get settled in your cabin, meet myself and Diana, Ray, and the crew, and we'll be off to the barn and arena and will begin matching you to the right horse for the week.  This trip, in particular, will require some good riding right out of the gate!
At times, you will want to get after a stubborn cow or calf, or a bunch of them, not wanting to move just because you want them too! You'll need to use your horse and yourself as best you can and push that bunch towards the rest.  Our horses will be ready for the job at hand and so will you!  Every hour that goes by horseback will build your confidence level and by the end of the first day, you will be good to go.

We'll be gathering cattle for at least two days while moving the main herd to a smaller, holding field, and then going back and finding and pushing strays and smaller groups of cows and calves to the same field. We should be ready to take the whole bunch cross country on Wednesday or Thursday and will then be taking them cross country to their winter home at Four Horns Lake, a two-day trip horseback and with any luck, the wind at our backs.

On that note, you will notice a bit of snow in the pics from this past October, well, we had a blow alright, but we kept on riding and had some absolutely gorgeous days as well. We did have some wind but for the most part, it was at our backs! Mornings in this part of Montana will be pretty nippy with the daytime sun warming things up. You'll need a good coat, hat, and gloves. You'll love this time of year.

If there is a trip with us that I'd say might involve a few more hours in the saddle over the period of five days this one would be it. We'll be needing to get all the cattle out of the foothills by the time we're done. We might have an easy day or two but may well have a long day or so mixed in. If you're in good shape and want to be there horseback you'll get it. Nevertheless, I would recommend some riding before you get here. We'll put the right horse in front of you for sure. You do your part as well.

General Policies

How Can We Make a Reservation and What Kind of Deposit Is Required?

Please give us a call or book online to make your reservation. For guests who are enjoying our Bed & Breakfast, we require a one night’s stay as deposit at the time or reservation. For our special event guests, a $500 per person deposit is required at the time of reservation.

For your convenience, we accept Visa, Mastercard, Discover, as well as personal checks. Full payment is due on the day prior to arrival. A 7% Montana Accommodations tax must be applied to your reservation. For our special event guests, the 7% is applied only to the lodging portion of your total cost.

Cancellation policy:

Deposits are non-refundable but may be applied to a rescheduled vacation with us, up to a year from your scheduled vacation. After a year, your deposit will be forfeited. Due to our non-refund policy, we recommend trip insurance to our guests for last minute medical or emergency cancellations.

If a cancellation is made 2 weeks or less prior to one of our event weeks, you will be charged 50% of your total amount as we will be unable to fill your spot in that time.

If you must cut your vacation short during one of our vacation weeks, we must still charge for the entire stay as we would be unable to fill your slot. If you are adding a day or two before and/or after your vacation week, the B&B rate would apply to those days. For our B&B guests, if we are able to fill your cancelled day(s), we will refund that day’s charge for your stay. No shows will be charged the full amount.

Alcoholic Beverages:

You should feel free to bring your own adult beverages. We have barware available for your use.

Is Smoking Permitted?

There is no smoking in the cabins. If you smoke, let us know and we’ll provide a receptacle for your use and you can smoke on your front porch. Or you may smoke in the designated area near the lodge. There is absolutely no smoking allowed anywhere near the barn, arena area, or the pasture. Horse poop is highly flammable and we are very strict about this policy. Late summer is fire season in Montana, our buildings are wood, our barn is old and weathered, and we do our very best to protect the area that we are privileged to call home.
