Spring Celebration: "Cowboying the Western Way of Life"

We've put together more than a few week long events over the past ten   years,   as   most   of   you   know,   there's     "Riding   the   Four   Winds,   Off the Beaten   Path,   Pure   Horsemanship,  " etc.       All of   them   have   worked   pretty   well,   some   better   than   I   or  some   of   the   folks   who've    been   part   of   them   would    have   ever imagined.     We   began   "Off the Beaten Path,"      our   now   very  successful annual   July   event,   three   years   ago,   and   it's a been nothing but a success and a pleasure to  be part of.    On that note, over the course of two days of riding with an old friend of mine,  Ray  Champ, while moving cows with our our guests and some of the local  cowboys, we began to talk about doing a real special   Spring event   that would  honor and celebrate many of the very traditional rites of   Spring that are an important part of our    western way of life.   Using the horse to gather and move cattle and to rope calves on "branding day," certainly qualifies.    Neighborhood  "brandings" bring together the families and friends of like-minded folks with a common purpose of    getting the job done while at the same time catching up with old friends and celebrating the Western Way  of Life.     What I'm talking about is   old time  visiting and guess what?   You 're invited!

Bear Creek Ranch will be hosting the Spring, 2018 "Cowboying  the Western Way of Life," beginning on Sunday, May 20th.   The week will begin at Bear Creek Ranch with a full day of horsemanship work on cattle in the  Bear Creek arena.  We'll be emphasizing all the skills you'll be using as we work cows and calves both in the pastures you'll be gathering in  but as well in the smaller pens.       As you get more confident with your skills you'll be welcome to try roping .      Ray is not only an accomplished horseman but also a life-long roper   and an excellent hands on teacher of the skill.     You'll   learn more than a little  bit under Ray's hands on  teaching and   will  enjoy his company   as well.

We'll  all be  moving to the prairie country on Tuesday and will spend a good part of the remainder of the week gathering cattle both to brand and move closer to summer range.   You'll be part of that entire process  including riding, roping, branding, castrating,  vaccinating, and doctoring the cattle.   May in northern Montana means light until late in the evening so plan on barbecuing until the stars are out!   You'll be meeting some of the finest cowboys and cowgirls  during the course of the week and will begin to understand the   value  the local folks put on the act of "visiting."

Monday,   Tuesday , and  Wednesday   will be spent  gathering cattle,  separating calves from cows, riding, roping , and  branding.   During the course of those days   we'll be eating lunches both home-made on the site and brought with us from Bear Creek.    Visiting   folks   will  contribute  their knowledge of the area, the western culture, the art of Cowboying,  and their own lives in  the American  West.   I promise you as well you'll meet some folks you'll never forget!

The latter part of the  week is going to be devoted to getting a smaller herd of cattle  cross -country to a staging area just prior to the mountains and  the summer grass the area is known for.     We'll  be  moving that  bunch of cattle for  two days, across rolling grass and  along just barely planted wheat fields.  The   massive peaks of the Rocky Mountain Front Range will  be in full view  all day, still carrying  an enormous amount of snow  in the higher elevations.  We should finish up  moving the cattle late on  Friday afternoon and will set our sights on a big,  eventful last day.

Saturday has been set aside for  a combination of sleep- in, breakfast, and then    the  afternoon activities.     Lunch outside will  be served bar-be-cue style prior to  a real team roping at the Bear Creek Ranch arena followed by a visit and sit down discussion of the American West   by some of the most well known  and respected   citizens from the area.

"Cowboying  the Western Way of Life,"    ends   on   Sunday.   You'll be   with us from Sunday  till Sunday and we're looking  forward to putting on one heckuva' event for   you.   I think this week as well will be   like none other  we've ever done but it's gonna'  be good one!

Limited to  10 guests.
